NON HABITUAL RESIDENT (NHR)

The aim of NHR is to attract talent in specified activities as well as Ultra and High Net Worth individuals and their families to Portugal, for example:

  • Those who are retired or of independent means

  • Those working in specified ‘High Value Added” professions

    • Fine artists, actors and musicians
    • Auditors
    • Doctors and dentists, teachers and psychologists
    • Liberal professions, technicians and similar
    • Senior managers
    • Investors, directors and managers, when part of companies covered by the contractual regime provided for in the Investment Tax Code.

NHR applicants need to spend more than 183 days in Portugal during the relevant fiscal year or have a home intending it to be their habitual residence at 31 December of the relevant year.

Foreign income: taxed pension and investment income and certain employment / self employment income obtained abroad is not double taxed in Portugal

Portuguese income: Specified profession earnings (employed or self-employed) are subject to a reduced 20% PIT (Personal Income Tax) rate for a period of 10 years.

GOLDEN VISA (GV)

GV is aimed at attracting investment to Portugal by foreigners (as individuals or through a company) from any country in the world.

The following types of investment each qualify for the GV programme, if held for a minimum of 5 years:

  • Acquisition of real estate for €500,000 or more

  • Transfer of funds of €1,000,000 or more

  • Creation of at least 10 jobs in Portugal

Under the GV, you gain a residency visa but only need to be in Portugal for around 14 days every year.

After 6 years, you can apply for Portuguese citizenship, which means you can then live anywhere in Europe.
